Thanks to the creativity, dedication, and persevering spirit of volunteers around the Diocese of Southern Ohio, the sudden restrictions placed on churches during the COVID-19 pandemic have not stopped many parishes in the Diocese from finding creative ways to continue to helping their neighbors.
With buildings closed many parish feeding programs have found ways to serve their weekly or monthly meals “to go” offering pick up or delivery, such as Episcopal Church of the Advent in Walnut Hills, Church of the Redeemer, St. Stephens Episcopal Church in Columbus, and Church of our Savior/La Iglesia de Nuestro Salvador in Mt. Auburn.
St. John’s Episcopal Church in Franklin moved their feeding ministry to the back of an SUV, marking off safe distance areas on the sidewalks so people can pick up meals and stay safe.
Despite not being able to accept walk-in clients, City Heart, a ministry of Christ Episcopal Church in Dayton found a way to continue helping the homeless, transient, and needy in their community by providing financial assistance for utilities, rent/housing needs, and wellness through telephone calls and emails.
The Church of the Good Samaritan in Amelia changed their feeding program to food pick up and also offers free essential hygiene products like soap, toilet paper, shampoo, and dish detergent.
The COVID-19 pandemic has financially stressed these and other ministries in the Diocese of Southern Ohio. To offer help, the Episcopal Community Ministries commission has been charged by Bishop Breidenthal to raise and distribute funds to enable any ministry in the diocese to be able to continue to function as best they can. To date, ECM has raised $18,000 and has distributed a little over $17,000 to parishes for immediate assistance. You can help these vital ministries by donating to ECM. Your donation will be matched by the William Cooper Procter Fund. To donate, visit ecmsouthernohio.org or send check to Diocese of Southern Ohio, attn. Episcopal Community Ministries, 412 Sycamore Street, Cincinnati, OH 45202. Make sure you indicate ECM Matching Grant campaign.
Thank you for your generosity! By sharing what you have, you are helping ministries and the people they serve throughout the Diocese of Southern Ohio continue to serve Christ and their communities as best they can during this unprecedented time.
